A collection of thoughts and actions from Halloween weekend. Hope you enjoy.
On My Mind
Trick-or-treating: One of the last nationwide, community-driven children activities
Children dressing up for Halloween are adorable. Trick-or-treating is a great activity.
It’s one of the few lasting traditions where kids are off their phones, out in their communities, meeting neighbors that they often wouldn’t regardless.
I love that adults are willing to go out, spend money on candy, and hand it out to the kids to make them happy, even if they don’t have kids of their own.
There are still societal pressures to participate in this community activity, centered around the children. You do NOT want to be the loser in the neighborhood who skips out on candy.
As society has becoming increasingly anti-children, there just aren’t many activities like this any more. Warms my heart this has stayed alive.
Which leads me to…
I do not understand the kidless adults who love Halloween
All that being said, I think there is a siege on Halloween by adults.
If you are an adult that is way too into horror movies, has creepy yard decorations, and it’s just for you and not the kids, I cannot figure you folks out.
No judgment. Just can’t figure it out.
At this point, I’m sure I’ve lost like half my readership.
In an attempt to rediscover our common ground with a familiar, shared foe so you don’t unfollow me:
The guy who calls it “All Hallows Eve”
F*ck that guy.
With that said, here’s a brief list of Halloween stuff I’m cool with:
Halloween costume party
Everybody loves a house party. Won’t ever say no to people trying to host and enjoy their people.
The people who go a little too crazy dressing up at their day job.
It’s certainly a bold move, but I have to respect it. They’re just trying to bring a good vibe to the workplace.
The Monster Mash.
It’s a bop. We don’t have enough random-holiday-themed dance music.
Where’s the Turkey Tumble? The Labor Day Limbo?
Let the people Mash.
What I’m Digging
I was in my absolute bag this weekend
Whipped up an absolute STORM in the kitchen this weekend. Sarah was craving some of my goodies and I got to work.
To quote my favorite baking-related song, “In the kitchen wrist twistin like it’s stir fry”
Homemade oatmeal cream pies.

Enough to make me full blown diabetic, but completely worth it.
The biggest room in my house? The room for improvement.
Made these a little too thicccc. Would go thinner next time.
(Yes, our countertops are missing, we’re working on it)
Protein balls

Whey powder, blended oats, dates (for the cervix (not mine), so I read), choc chips, and PB. Delicious.
I’m well aware I bake like a guy weighing well north of two bills from the deep south.
It’s who I am.
I’m not ashamed of it.
White Chicken Chili

Forgot to get a finished picture with the cream cheese, but got this one of the crockpot mid-crock.
I like my chili hearty. Sue me!
Topped it off with some sour cream, cheese, and avocado slices.
Love a meal with leftovers.
As a reminder: I’m not a hero. Just a guy.
Stuck In My Head
Not exactly the soundtrack to my week - I just want you to share in the misery of these catchy tunes getting locked into your brain for the foreseeable future
A couple great ones I’ve been singing all week.
Not a clue how this got in my head, but if your grandma also used to watch TV Land, this will hit you right in the feels.
On Wikipedia, I learned that this guy died at 30 in a plane crash. RIP.
Have a great week, y’all.
Thanks for reading
Sincerely,
Zander Barth
